ANDREW MAGINLEY
Lute, Theorboe & Baroque Guitar
Andrew Maginley is hailed as the most dynamic lutenist of this generation. A Native New Yorker and Fulbright Scholar, Andrew has since 1995 lived in Germany, and now in the UK, working as solo recitalist and high profile continuo player throughout Europe, the U.K. and North America.
Andrew began playing electric guitar whilst studying illustration at the High School of Art & Design, New York. After gaining a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, he studied lute and theorbo at Mannes College of Music receiving a Master's Degree in Historical Performance.
Andrew specializes in the virtuoso solo music of the d-minor baroque lute. His second solo recording, Andrew Maginley: The Baroque Lute - J.S. Bach, S.L. Weiss & Adam Falckenhagen , on Avie Records has been highly praised. He has given solo performances at the Bachhaus in Eisenach, Germany, the Bloomington Early Music Festival and the New York City Early Music Series, as well as playing live on BBC Radio 3.
Andrew has been a featured continuo accompanist for artists including Frederica von Stade, Catherine Nagelstad, Susan Graham, Kurt Streit, Kobie van Rensberg and David Daniels, and appeared onstage at the Nederlandse Opera throughout Cosi fan tutte, as a wandering guitar-player accompanying all recitatives on solo guitar, with Danielle de Niese and Sally Matthews.
Most recently Andrew has performed with the Ulster Orchestra featuring Andreas Scholl in Dublin and Northern Ireland; with Opera North and Harry Bicket in Keiser's The Fortunes of King Croesus; and with the English Concert under Andrew Manze.
Further festival appearances have included the International Handel-Festival Göttingen, Berlin Tage für Alte Musik, Aspen Festival, Telemann Festspiele Magdeburg, and the Händel Festspiele Halle.
Andrew has also worked with many leading conductors including Harry Bicket, Jan Schultsz, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Frieder Bernius, Nicholas Kok, Alessandro de Marchi, Gary Wedow, Chris Moulds, Constantinos Carydis and Ingo Metzmacher.
He now lives in Surrey, England with his wife, contralto Emma Curtis and, together with her, co-directs The Frolick - an ensemble specializing in neglected chamber, opera and theatre music of the 17th- and 18th- centuries. Their current recording Calliope: Beautiful Voice - volume the first, English Songbooks of the 1700s, is available on Avie Records. It has been awarded Best of 2006 by the All Music Guide, and been widely acclaimed. Volume two is planned for 2009.
